Remodeling Pointers

I recently added 1400 square feet to my house and totally redid the old portion of the house. Here are some remodeling pointers that I want to share with you:

  • Go to model homes and get ideas.
  • Talk to people and get referrals for a great licensed general contractor.
  • A great contractor really makes a difference and greatly reduces your stress level.
  • Don't just go with the cheapest or the most expensive contractor.
  • Meet with 3-5 contractors.
  • Get ideas and quotes.
  • Check them out with your local licensing board and with the better business bureau.
  • Go and see their work.
  • Make sure that you and the contractor are on the same wavelength and can communicate well together.
  • Ideally the contractor can help you plan your new space. They know the cost of things and can help figure out the best way to accomplish your goals.
  • Figure out how much your remodel is going to cost and decide if it is affordable.
  • Check with an appraiser or Realtor to make sure that you are not over-improving for your neighborhood.

Do you need to refinance to pull money out of your house to do the improvements? If so, call me ASAP.

This is part one of a several part series on remodeling/home improvements.
